Alexandria, Va. (December 8, 2011) - The State Government Leadership Foundation hosted a forum with U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), six secretaries of state and the Heritage Foundation to discuss the movement for a National Popular Vote Compact.

  • Most Important Issue Nobody’s Talking About: The fight over the Electoral College is ‘the most important issue in America nobody's talking about,’ Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said at a Wednesday forum co-sponsored by the Heritage Foundation and the State Government Leadership Foundation, a GOP-friendly nonprofit that has recently unveiled a new website and ramped up its operations.” (Roll Call)

  • Brings This Country To Its Knees:  “This would, McConnell said, be ‘a catastrophic outcome’ and ‘a constitutional crisis’ that ‘brings this country to its knees. We’ve never had a situation where the president wasn’t sworn in by the date specified in the Constitution.’” (NBC Politics)

  • A Constitutional End Run: “I do believe it is an end run around the Constitution,” Beth Chapman, Alabama Secretary of State said.  “Chapman, a Republican, argued that a national popular vote would disenfranchise Alabama and other small states because presidential candidates would focus their campaigns on only the largest, most populous states.” (The Birmingham News)

  • A Very Real Threat: “The NPV is a very real threat to the elections process in the United States and, should it take effect, will lead to massive voter fraud and could leave the country with a constitutional crisis every four years,” said Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett. (SGLF)

  • An Incentive For Voter Fraud: “Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach contended that with NPV, ‘the incentive for voter fraud increases dramatically overall because you can just go to the state that is the weakest link in the chain and has the lowest protections against voter fraud and run up a huge number of fraudulently cast votes in that state much more effectively than going to a battleground state.’” (NBC Politics)
About the SGLF
The State Government Leadership Foundation (SGLF) spotlights hotbed issues and conservative policies that state government officials wrestle with most. For too long, out-of-touch leaders in the states have colluded with special interests to raise taxes, swell state budgets, and increase the size of government. The SGLF is taking the lead on educating elected and appointed state government officials, providing support to local officeholders, and highlighting meaningful, conservative solutions. The SGLF is a 501 (c)(4) social welfare organization affiliated with the Republican State Leadership Committee, one of the largest conservative caucuses in the country.
