Criminal justice reform

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Some historical criminal justice policies have had unintended consequences, leaving many disenfranchised. The United States is one of the greatest nations in the history of the world and it is imperative that we ensure our criminal justice system treats every person equally under the law. Many of the policies that do exactly that are born in state legislatures.

  • Every state should have a criminal justice system that respects the humanity of the individual.

  • Every individual who is accused of a crime deserves due process.

  • Fair sentencing that is proportional to the severity of the crime is necessary for equality in criminal justice.

  • We need to reduce recidivism rates with reforms that provide individuals leaving prison with opportunities to reintegrate into their community as productive members of society.

  • Over-criminalization leads to lack of faith in the system and a failure to address the root problems at hand.
